The Beginning

It started last week when Sarah felt poorly, but not so bad that she was unable to work or function. She had been pale and weak on occasion and had continued normal activities including helping her parents move boxes. We did notice that she bruised rather easily and was often just not her normal energetic self.

On Tuesday morning she was unable to catch her breath, her heart was pumping extra hard, and she had no energy at all so I determined we would visit the Emergency Room that morning. They began by taking blood and started running tests. At first we thought it was either anemia or some reaction to some new meds she was on, but soon they informed us that her cell count (red, white, and platelet) was abnormally low and would begin transfusions immediately. She began to feel better after they gave her 4 units of blood and now they could start looking for why the count was so off.

They first looked at possible bleeding, but found nothing out of the ordinary that would explain her status. So they felt it was either lack of creating new blood cells or an autoimmune problem where new cells were being attacked as foreign matter. Because her condition was unknown she was admitted to the hospital for overnight observation on Tuesday. Blood work was run every 4 hours, which became a clotting/bruising problem due to low platelet counts.

To learn if new cells were being made they needed a bone marrow biopsy which began on Wednesday morning when the first two attempts for marrow came up dry. The third attempt was to extract core material, but this was excruciatingly painful and halted immediately. The biopsy was rescheduled for Thursday morning using same-day surgery. The procedure on Thursday resulted in one dry marrow tap so again a core sample was extracted. The core sample was insufficient so they did two to ensure they had enough material for testing.

Sarah was sent home to rest and was doing so when a call from the Oncologist came at 2pm to come to the office immediately. Sarah's parents were in town at the time and they came with us to the meeting. It didn't take long and the doctor broke the news that she definitely had Leukemia. Which type was still not pinpointed but she was to be admitted to the hospital again as soon as possible.

After further testing was done on Friday and Saturday, the lab was able to identify that she had Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia. The Oncologist indicated that of all the various types of leukemia this one is dangerously aggressive but also treatable with a high success rate of remission and cure.

Sarah,
I am so sorry to hear your news. My sister was just diagnosed with acute leukemia as well and has started her treatment. I don't remember exacted what kind. She's doing pretty good. I have high hopes for both of you. Keep that positive attitude that you are so good at and know there are lots of prayers going out in your behalf.

Love ya!

Treatment has started and everything is going well. The doctors this morning said that my numbers are even a little up/better than expected, and that everything is "par for the course".
Stay happy; I love to hear all the funny stories happening out there! Laughter is truly the best medicine of all!

OK, I have a joke...bear with me! Here goes...
A frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller. He can see from her nameplate that her name is Patricia Whack.
"Miss Whack, I'd like to get a $30,000 loan to take a holiday."
Patty looks at the frog in disbelief and asks his name.
The frog says his name is Kermit
Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger, and thats it's okay, he know the bank manager.
Patty explains that he will need to secure the loan with some collateral.
The frog says, "Sure, I have this," and produces a tiny porcelain elephant, about an inch tall, bright pink and perfectly formed.
Very confused, Patty explains that she'll have to consult with the bank manager and disappears into a back office.
She finds the mangaer and says, "There's a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to borrow $30,000, and he wants to use this as collateral."
She holds up the tiny pink elephant, "I mean, what in the world is this?"
The bank manager looks back at her and says..."It's a knick knack, Patty Whack. Give the frog a loan. His old man's a Rolling Stone."
(You're singing it, aren't you? I know I was.)

Sorry if you've already heard it, but I thought it was hilarious!

Love you guys. Glad to hear treatments have started. We love you!

Sarah, We heard the news Saturday and wanted to come and visit you to see if there was anything we could do for you or KC, but we all had sore throats and didn't want to chance getting you sick. But, we are thinking about you everyday and praying for you (like so many others!) We put your name on the prayer rolls in the temple and now you have a host of angels praying for you too (that is always a great thing, huh?!)

Scott is going to try to come up in the next couple of days to check on you - the sore throats never turned into anything for us other then etting us know we had our heater up too high at night, so we feel okay having him visit you. I want to come also, but I have three little shadows that follow me everywhere I go and I don't think it would be a good idea to have them trail me in the hospital.

Since you are having to stay there for a while, do you need any logic puzzle magazines, good books to read, books on cd to listen to, movies to watch? Interested in any games (card, board, imaginary)? Anything?

Or what about KC or anyone else who is staying with you, anyone need (non-hospital) snacks or food? I would love to help out however! We are putting together a list of ladies in the ward who would like to come "play" with you for a while so that you have someone with you and the rest of your famiy can run errands or do whatever they need to.

Just let us know...this is a big thing you are going through, and it is always easier to go through big things when you are surrounded by friends and family who love you and think you are awesome!

Dear Sarah and KC,
This is awesome. I have enjoyed all the comments and information-I can't resist leaving a blog comment. We love you so much and you are in our thoughts and prayers always. Do you remember one of our favorite songs from Saturday's Warrior? The angel song? I wish I could sing it for you but think of it in your head- you have angels all around you, watching over you. So even though we cannot be there for you, all the time, we are there with you with the help of our Heavenly Father's angels. We are with you in body and spirit, never hesitate to call, as you know we love to hear your voices. We love ya, Mom and Dad

I heard the news from Aunt Linda, with a follow up call to your Dad and Mom. You had better get better young lady, as I intend to dance with you at the wedding in May. By then, Audra will be a mother (to Peyton) and Erik will be married to Becca. I have a good feeling about this - that you are going to beat this thing - and I have a really good track record with these things, so don't let me down! You are both in my thoughts and prayers.
Love ya'
